Newport Mansions

These fabled mansions, the extravagant “summer cottages” of America’s Gilded Age, portray the opulence of a bygone era.

We like The Breakers and Rosecliff (Wayne once played the part of Nick Carraway in an on-site performance of The Great Gatsby there!), but Marble House, The Elms and Chateu-sur-Mer are also quite lovely.

Wine Tasting + Vineyard tour

Sakonnet Vineyard in Little Compton was founded in 1975. The Southeastern New England coast closely resembles some of the great wine regions of the world, particularly the maritime climates of northern France. Wine production is over 30,000 cases annually, with many wines receiving awards in domestic and international competitions.

Their café is lovely, and Laura really likes their ‘Amrita’ wine, which is a very sweet white.

If you’re super-short on time, you can visit their lovely outpost on South Main Street in Providence – their Bourbon Vanilla Latte is a treat!

Beavertail Lighthouse in Jamestown

Beavertail Lighthouse, built in 1856, was and still is the premier lighthouse in Rhode Island, marking the entrance to Narragansett Bay. The 64-foot (20 m) lighthouse lies on the southernmost point of Conanicut Island in the town of Jamestown, Rhode Island in Beavertail State Park, on a site where beacons have stood since the early 18th century.

Laura’s dad used to take the whole family there to skip rocks on the water by the shore. A must-see spot!

Can you think of a lovelier name for a street? Tree-lined with wide sidewalks, full of independently owned businesses, Providence’s Hope Street more than lives up to its moniker.

Some of Laura’s favorite shops are here: Studio Hop and Frog & Toad. Further down the street is the BEST vegan bakery anywhere – Wildflour Bakery. Worth a visit!
